How to use Sentinel HD55S Dehumidifier

If you want to optimize the efficiency of the sentinel HD 55S Dehumidifier, you need to do the following:

· Place the dehumidifier on a dry level surface. Avoid putting it on a vapor barrier such as a damp basement.
· Consult the manual when installing the unit
· When you want to switch the unit on or off, make use of the remote control.
· Avoid using the power switch to switch it off.
· Use the arrow keys to set your desired humidity level. Choose anything between 50- 55%.
· Even after the unit has been switched off via the remote control, ensure that you allow the fan to continue running until it stops. It helps to remove the dissipated heat.
· The unit drains itself automatically as it operates. However, if you are planning to keep it in-store, you must give an allowance of at least 10 minutes so that it can defrost. You should lean the drain a little bit to ensure that the unit drains completely.

When you want to store the unit, the following must be observed.

· Turn off the dehumidifier and allow it to dry
· The power code should be wrapped and secured
· The filter mesh should be protected by covering it
· Ensure the unit is stored in a clean dry place

Where It Can Be Used Application

The unit finds a lot of applications in warehouses, basement, crawl spaces, and even offices. It is also used in shops, storage areas, apartments, and factories. Other places where the unit is likely to be used are in bars and restaurants and museums. It is also widely used in computer rooms to reduce dampness or dust. Sentinel HD 55 is an energy-efficient product that is, CE, ETL.

It is a whole-house dehumidifier that can be relied on to solve damage to any building. If a building suffers from dampness, Sentinel HD55S can be deployed to provide a solution to the humidity problem. The dehumidifier comes with a filter that makes installing it much easier.  The fact that it features optional duct mounting flanges reduces the time it takes to have it installed.

How the Unit Operates

You will select the relative humidity you want. It uses the integral humidistat to monitor the space and conditions. When the humidity level rises beyond the set levels, the unit energizes. When this happens, it draws air across the evaporator coils. Typically, the coils will be cooler than the dew point of the air. Moisture will then condense out of the air.  The remaining air will then be reheated and distributed into the condenser coil. It will then be redistributed in the house.

Installing The Unit

Ensure that you use vapor barriers to seal off the areas where you want to control their humidity levels. If it is the crawl spaces, check and ensure that all the vents are sealed.

Also, ensure that the environment in which you want to install the dehumidifier is not corrosive. Notice that we have some liquid barriers that dry through solvent evaporation. So it is your mandate to ensure that the barrier is dry and that the area is sealed.

Before using the dehumidifier, check and ensure that it is placed on a level surface.  Avoid placing it in a vapor barrier.

Set the desired humidity level using the up and down button.  Choose the most comfortable level for you. It should range from 36-90%. Once you set your point, the machine will stop dehumidifying as long as the set point has been reached. When indoor humidity rises above the set level, the machine automatically starts operating.

You can choose to set the machine into continuous mode. This can be done by using the up and down arrow. Check and ensure you see the continuous button illuminate green. It indicates that the unit has been switched to a continuous mode. You will see CO on the display screen.

Cleaning the unit

To optimize the use of the dehumidifier, it is necessary that you clean its body.  You need is a soft piece of cloth to do this. Soak it in water without soap or solvent and use it to wipe the dehumidifier. Also, you may unplug and clean the filter by washing it with soap-less water. Alternatively, you may choose to vacuum the unit.  Just try to ensure that it dries before reinstalling it.  Notice that the coil must also be cleaned once a year. You may use an approved coil cleaner to do this job.

Precautions

· Before powering the sentinel dehumidifier, ensure that it is connected using a grounded electrical connection.
· When you choose to have the unit repaired or maintained, ensure that you get a competent technician.
· If you choose to move the dehumidifier to another place, unplug it from the power supply.
· If the unit gets flooded with water, it is recommended that you open it so that it can dry before attempting to reconnect it.
· Don't position the discharge and the inlet onto the wall. Ensure that the inlet has a 12" space clearance while the discharge should have a 36" clearance.
· If the unit is close to a wall, ensure that the inlet is parallel to the wall while the discharge should face away from the wall.
· If you choose to clean the unit, ensure that it is unplugged from the power source.
· Don't use the machine as a support when you want to reach items that are high.

Works good until they fail
By 'Ken', Reviewed on November 25, 2023
I have owned 4 units from them and they all do a good job with lowering the humidity . The issue I have is that one of the units quit working right before 3 years of use and I can not get anyone to call me back or return an email with regards of fixing or replacing.
High quality - highly recommend

While multiple times more expensive than the $200 dehumidifiers I had been purchasing at Home Depot in the past, this is a quality product. Mine has been in use for over a year with no issues at all. The only reason I gave it 4 stars for maneuverability is due to the weight of the unit (due to it being well built and high quality). I am using mine in a crawl space under my house that is only a few feet high and difficult to move around in. I am hoping the unit will last several more years, and if it does, then I will try to purchase the exact same type of unit as the replacement.

Very solid unit

Bought this to replace another dehumidifier that failed after about 3 years. I use a dehumidifier in my basement laundry room, with the unit on auto all year. I decided to go with this unit because it seemed much more durable. So far I have been impressed with the construction and low noise level. I will take care of this unit and expect it to last.
Compact and easy installation

Light enough to handle and install with one person. Installed in a solar powered weekend log cabin in the loft. Uses 500 watts at 120VAC. Running on a timer for three hours a day. Cabin is about 7000 cubic feet (600 square feet with loft), Maintains 50 to 55% RH when outside is 85% plus. Unit runs quiet with exhaust fan the only noticeable noise.
Heavy but wonderful unit

Nice to have a unit which pulls the humidity out so well ( Florida near beach). It has been a plug in and set it product! Not suitable for unconcealed usage - for aesthetic concerns. Noise during operation understandable, noise will also better for behind wall or part of HVAC installation area.perfect for basement dehumidification.
Not commercial grade

I purchased this product with high hopes, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. It only drops by 3~5 rh for a whole day. This is far from being commercial-grade.
Well built

Only used for under a week so I am not sure about longevity but it seems well built and there are many high star reviews. Pros: Noise is very low, easy to set up, removes a lot of moisture (set up in basement) My basement went from 65% humidity to under 50% within a day. Cons: No built in moisture container needs to be close to a drain, discharge tube is gravity fed so humidifier needs to be higher than drain or container. I installed it in a basement where a floor drain was close by so the drainage issues were not a problem for me, however if it is installed where there is no drain a container to catch the water is needed, the humidifier also needs to be higher than the water container. this may not be a problem for some but it does require some planning to locate the item. The other issue with draining into a container is that the humidifier removes a lot of water in a short time, so keeping watch on the container so it does not overflow is essential as there is not a automatic shut off for a filled container as is the case with many residential humidifier.
Stopping working after 2 day.

Seemed to work dropping humidity from 70 to 48 in my basement but stopped working within 24 hours.
Cool air, but kinda loud

From the Amazon

By 'Regular Ol Person', Reviewed on July 01, 2023
I like that it is compact and blows cool air, but there is no fan speed options and the thing is a bit on the loud side. It is in the corner of a basement, but I can hear it upstairs. Also, the controls are a pain in the butt. You push buttons, but do not get an immediate response. Half the time I do not know if the power is "really" on or not so I unplug the unit and start all over. Basement seems dry and not hot so I guess that is what matters.

Can this be used in a garage? Does it need to be taken inside for storage during the winter, or can I unplug it and leave it in the garage?

Yes, it can be used in the garage. You can leave it in the garage with something well covered for storage. Make sure no dust and rusting.
I have about a 1200sq ft basement with a finished drop ceiling. Will this dehumidify the area below the drop ceiling mounted in the ceiling, or do I need ducts?

Pippa on October 05, 2021

If it is inside the ceiling, it will not dehumidify the space below it. It needs to be placed in the same room that needs the dehumidification. This unit can only be ducted using the exhaust.
Can this unit be set on a shelf up high and work as it should?
