The user manual says it will 'resume normal operation after a power outage' but also that the 'fan will run for a minute after shutdown.' 

If I put the hdi90 on an outlet controlled by a wall switch or by home automation software to save energy during peak, it will not have that 1 minute fan cycle.

Will this result in damage of the unit in the long term? It would switch off like this 80 times per year.

In the operation of the machine by direct power off to shut down the machine practice, although not yet to damage the machine but this is not conducive to the maintenance of the machine. We recommend that the humidity or power button to shut down the machine, the fan will delay the shutdown, but drying the residual moisture inside will better protect the machine.
